Conference reception

Delegates are welcome to join us at the Conference Reception on the evening of Wednesday 5 December, from 5:30pm. The reception will be held at The Gym in central Christchurch, just a short walk from the main conference venue.  This informal evening is an opportunity to meet and (re)connect with fellow development researchers and practitioners (over a free drink). The reception is also an opportunity for your organisation or group to have a visible presence, and to display or disseminate publications or other materials related to your organisation’s work and role. If you would like display space on the evening, please email edward.challies[at]canterbury.ac.nz

Studying Development: Student Meet, Greet and Yarn

This is a fantastic opportunity to bring students together from around New Zealand and overseas, who are studying development related fields. It will be a chance for students to meet each other, discuss their research and studies, and just generally enjoy a little development banter. This is not limited to people attending the conference and is open to anyone with an interest in working in the development sphere. This event will be held in a bar near the YMCA (TBA). Please contact Jovanie Espresor: jovanie.espesor[at]pg.canterbury.ac.nz for more information and to RSVP.

Conference dinner

For those attending the Conference Dinner on Thursday 6 December, we look forward to connecting with friends and colleagues, new an old from 6.30pm at The Gym, which is in central Christchurch and a short walk from the main conference venue. Be sure to advise of special dietary requirements when you register for the dinner as part of your conference registration: https://devnet2018.com/registration/

Lunchtime forum

Friday, 7 December, from 12.30 to 1.30pm, a lunchtime forum chaired by Regina Scheyvens will be held in Papa Hou (YMCA) to reflect on the conference. Note that lunch boxes (available in the Forum venue), will only be available to those who have pre-ordered them. However, the Forum is open to anyone (no RSVP required).

Walking tours of Central Christchurch

The walking tour will be an opportunity to go on an exploration tour around Christchurch Central! We will have a wander around multiple community initiatives (such as GapFiller projects, and Greening the Rubble community gardens), explore the street art, visit new infrastructure and urban spaces popping up, and acknowledge pre-earthquake spaces. It will be an appreciation tour for this exciting, transitional time Christchurch currently sits in. Ella Martin, our volunteer tour organiser and guide is a born and bred Cantabrian who saw the city’s transition first hand. It’s an ideal activity for some fresh air before/between/after chats at the conference, and a good way to get your walking shoes on (comfy shoes are a must!), to explore Christchurch in an exciting stage. Be prepared for sunglasses weather, or rain jacket weather – you never know in Christchurch! The tours should be around an hour but are very flexible in terms of where people need to be for the conference. We’re planning to set off from the YMCA.

Available tour times:

  • Tuesday 4th at 4pm
  • Thursday 6th at 5pm
  • Friday 7th at 8am
  • Saturday 8th at 9am (if there is enough interest)
